Born to Draw!
Since early childhood Kyarna has used the process of drawing to channel her emotions and release them non verbally onto paper.
“I started drawing as soon as I could hold a pencil, I drew on everything – walls, bed sheets, drive ways, under the bed and occasionally on paper. Drawing is like meditation to me. It relaxes me and I express how I feel through it. I draw my feelings and always have… it’s my way to get it all out.”
Kyarna is addicted to drawing and it is this driving force that takes her on a new creative path each time her pen touches the paper.
“I can’t remember not drawing – it’s been the constant in my life – I just like to draw.”
My Head Spins!
Kyarna interprets human emotions and brings them to the fore in her works, often confronting and amusing. Her work is so detailed, allowing plenty of time for the mind to wander into the wonderful world of creation. She has multiple works on the go as she finds herself creating the next piece in her head while working on the current one. It’s always a race to put the idea down on paper before it goes!
Inspiration – The ideas just come out and when the drawing is finished I can look back and work out what the trigger was. After a trip to Spain I found myself putting octopus tentacles in my drawings – it must have been from eating all that Galician Octopus! Other pieces are just pure emotion of how I feel at the time.
Kyarna’s remarkable emotional insight has seen her create quirky, humorous, loving and confrontational works. She loves capturing emotions through the depiction of facial and body expressions. Is it an in-depth analysis of human nature or just being able to laugh at yourself – you decide. She likes to let her art speak for itself and allows viewers to put their own slant on it.
Method or Madness!
My micro fine line drawing style started developing around 15 years ago. Each drawing starts with a pencil sketch idea straight onto the paper. With ink pen in hand Kyarna begins with the finest lines creating the details as she works on the piece, often going off on tangents as new ideas present themselves during the process. The original idea takes on a life of it’s own once the ink touches the paper and it develops and grows until it reaches the final stages.
Kyarna’s techniques have developed over the years as she explores the effects of making different marks. This gives her the ability to draw Pop Art, Fantasy through to Realistic depictions. Every now and then she will add spot colour to her works.
